This is the original Fransiscan church where, in the year 1562, Bishop Diego de Landa he burned all existing Mayan books (three somehow managed escape) and idols as part of his campaign to wrench the Mayans away from the devil. He was later sent back to Spain to face trial for his crimes against the Yucatecan Maya; he was acquitted of all charges. During his trial in his own defense, he recorded much of his knowledge of the Maya in the book "Yucatan Before and After the Conquest." Although containing valuable information, he destroyed much more knowledge of Maya history and sciences than he preserved in his book. (Image Credit: Michelle Williamson, Ideum)

Mani has been occupied for nearly 4000 years; it was the seat of the Tutal Xiu dynasty after it moved its capital from Uxmal in the thirteenth century. This dynasty dominated the western Yucatan after the fall of Mayapan in 1441 until the Spanish Conquest. When they moved in, the Fransiscans dismantled the existing temples and used the stones to build the Parish and Exconvent of the Archangel Saint Michael, established in 1549.
